The Candlestick

Excellent

This curious candlestick marks the highest point of the town of Whitehaven, located in what was formerly a cliff and in earlier times part of the bastion. The views are beautiful: the sea, the harbor, the people and the rugged coastline of this part of the country, but the mystery is to identify what this curious monument exactly is. At first it seems easy but even the locals are not so clear? A commemorative column? A pillar? A monument? The answer to all these questions is no, it was an old factory chimney. Coal was worked there, one of the most famous of northern England during the Industrial Revolution.

Which also explains the name or reference to it. Regardless of their colossal size, the factory fires were so strong that you could see flames in the highest part of the chimney, which due to its shape resembled a giant candle. Apparently it was a very known by sailors from the port as a point of reference was clear that the same port headlights. This popularity and made him famous was subsequently become monument of this town, as it has come down to our days.
