Impressive gardens
Edzell Castle was built in the 16th century and enlarged in the 17th century, when it added its impressive gardens. The castle is about 7 km from the city of Brechin, in the town that shares its name with the castle. It was built by David Lindsay but it was his son Sir David Lindsay, first Lord of Edzell who was obsessed with culture and knowledge. He was the one who brought this castle to its best to build the famous gardens in the year 1604. All facades of the gardens are decorated with reliefs, dedicated to different areas of knowledge, such as medicine, law or elements of the classical world.
Recent studies link this castle with Freemasonry and other esoteric practices. The castle was sold to the Lords of Dalhousie since the last heir of the Lindsays did not handle the fortune he inherited, ending his days as a gardener was his castle, and in the hands of the Dalhousie family. Since 1930, it's been maintained by Historic Scotland, the entity that is responsible for carrying out research on the building. The castle is built in red stone. The gardens are the most impressive I've seen in a while.
