Hadrian's Wall was a colossal work, about 117 kilometres long, built by the Roman Empire in what is currently the North of England. It was begun in the year 122 AD, to delineate the Empire's border over barbarian territories, which correspond to the ancient kingdoms of Dalriada and Pictland, Scotland. The wall crossed England from west to east (or vice versa), from Carlisle to Newcastle. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and is currently a route that attracts many travellers who enjoy walking it by foot, car or bus. Previously, it was much higher and had more towers than we see today.
