Todos brasileiros sabem o quanto é interessante fazer compras nas cidades de fronteira do Uruguai. Produtos de qualidade, de todos os lugares do mundo, a preços muito mais acessíveis. Uma maravilha para quem quer economizar. O Uruguai possui várias zonas livres, com free shops para compras: Chuy (principal entrada para o litoral uruguaio), Rio Branco (vizinha de Jaguarão) e mais ao oeste Aceguá (próxima a Bagé).
Rivera é a cidade onde estão as maiores lojas, que possuem uma variedade maior de produtos. Os melhores freeshops para compra são: Barão Free Shop, Neutral Duty Free Shop, Sineriz, Mantra, Duty Free Americas e Zebra. Atualmente os produtos que mais valem a pena serem adquiridos no Uruguai são perfumes, bebidas, roupas e assessórios de marcas esportivas, pneus e alguns eletro-eletrônicos. Também tem muito produto chinês que são muito baratos e funcionais mas de qualidade, às vezes, duvidosa.
Na rua Agraciada (paralela à Av. Sarandí) é onde se encontram as melhores lojas de comestíveis. Em geral, os derivados do leite não são muito baratos (equivalente aos do Brasil), mas são de qualidade muito superior. Os embutidos também são muito procurados. As carnes uruguaias são espetaculares; são compradas nos açougues mesmo, mas tem que tomar cuidado, pois os uruguaios não possuem o mesmo controle de vigilância sanitária do Brasil. Nessas lojas também existem muitos produtos importados (chocolates, chás...) que também são melhores e mais baratos em relação ao Brasil. Além das compras não há muito que fazer. O movimento à noite está na rua principal (a Sarandí), onde se encontram os restaurantes e onde as pessoas (a pé ou de carro) costumam passear. Na cidade tem o Estádio Atílio Paiva, que foi construído para a Copa América de 95 e onde seguidamente recebe jogos importantes, como os da dupla Gre-Nal e da Seleção Uruguaia. Mas, o principal atrativo, na minha opinião, é a troca de experiência com o povo e o aprendizado dos costumes de um pais vizinho.
