The prison gate
Leon has been a walled city since ancient times, though today only the Castle Gate remains of the four gates that once stood: the other three have been destroyed, the most recent (Puerta Obispo) in 1910. This gate is in the northern part of the wall, and serves as a passage between Plaza Puerta Castillo and Plaza del Espolon. Although it is not considered to date entirely from the medieval era, there are two stones inside with medieval inscriptions: it was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, preserving some of the old stones.
