6 reviews of Door of Carlos V (or the Castle of the Bridge)

Door dating back to the 16th century

Nursery City was surrounded by high walls of towers that are wide. This walled city had up to 6 gates and 4 wickets, which was the gateway to the 3 main roads. The most famous of these is the Puerta de Carlos V dating back to the 16th century.

The town of Viveiro was a walled city....

The town of Viveiro was a walled city. The walls were built as a defense against external attacks and isolation from their neighbors in times of plague. Currently several doors are preserved, Charles V being the most important, and the emblem of Viveiro. It lies at the confluence of the streets Maria Sarmiento (which leads directly to the Plaza Mayor), Av. De Galicia and Crossing Marina, just across the Bridge of Mercy and Landro River Cove. This gate is the main entrance to the historic town of Viveiro. Also it called "Porta do Castelo da Ponte"; It is Plateresque and rose in tribute to Carlos I of Spain and V of Germany in the sixteenth century over a former XII. Battlements, topped by heads of warriors, give appearance of strength. The main facade (opposite the bridge) consists of two bodies, the lower (on both sides of the entrance arch) are shields and Viveiro Galicia; and upper imperial coat of arms, and on it, the bust of Carlos V with scepter and crown. There are also four medallions with figures inside the right with masculine faces, and the female left. Over time it shows, as they are already quite blurred and not clearly visible details. On the rear facade of the arc (C / Maria Sarmiento) is in a niche wooden image of San Roque, co-patron of Viveiro. This door is declared National Artistic Historical Monument. Other gates of the wall are still preserved the Porta da Vila and Porta do Valado.
