Dolphins of Monkey Mia

Ci troviamo in una delle zone più selvagge d’Australia: La Shark Bay, dove i centri abitanti nel raggio di 200 chilometri si contano sul palmo della mano. Questo tratto di costa, inserito nel Patrimonio dell’Umanità, custodisce un patrimonio faunistico marino unico, tra delfini, dugonghi, squali e tartarughe marine. La località più famosa è senza dubbio Monkey Mia: Qui, da oltre 50 anni, ogni giorno una colonia di delfini si avvicina alla riva per interagire con l’uomo. L’esperienza è di quelle indimenticabili: Osservare questi delfini che arrivano dal mare aperto, si fermano a due metri da riva, vengono coccolati dai rangers e dai turisti, è davvero incredibile. Naturalmente ci sono alcune regole da seguire, per fare in modo che questa abitudine non venga prima o poi abbandonata e per non incidere sulle capacità dei delfini di continuare a procurasi il cibo da soli. I rangers controllano attentamente la situazione, offrendo loro solo qualche piccolo pesce, per mano dei bambini presenti. I delfini si avvicinano a riva più volte al giorno, il loro numero può variare ma solitamente arrivano in gruppi di 7-8, restano in compagnia dei turisti per una ventina di minuti, prima di riprendere il largo e tornare magari dopo un’ora. Questo iter prosegue per tutta la mattinata, mentre è più raro vederli durante il pomeriggio. Sulla spiaggia è stato costruito un resort attrezzatissimo, con diverse soluzioni di pernottamento, dalle camera con cucina fino al semplice campeggio.

We are in one of the wildest areas of Australia: Shark Bay, where the population centers within 200 km there are the palm of your hand. This stretch of coast, part of the World Heritage Site, contains a unique marine fauna, including dolphins, dugongs, sharks and sea turtles. The most popular resort is undoubtedly Monkey Mia: Here, for over 50 years, every day a colony of dolphins close to shore to interact with humans. The experience of those unforgettable: Watch these dolphins coming from the open sea, stop at two meters from the shore, are pampered by the rangers and tourists, is truly amazing. Of course there are some rules to follow to make sure that this habit is not sooner or later abandoned and not affect the ability of dolphins to continue to procure food for themselves. The rangers will monitor the situation closely, giving them only a few small fish, at the hands of the children present. The dolphins come close to shore several times a day, their number can vary but usually arrive in groups of 7-8, remain in the company of tourists for about twenty minutes before it set sail again and maybe come back after an hour. This process continues throughout the morning, while it is rare to see them in the afternoon. The hotel has been built a resort equipped with different solutions of lodging, from the kitchen to the bedroom with simple camping.

Situé à l'extrêmité nord de la péninsule de Shark Bay, le site de Monkey Mia fait partie du site classé au patrimoine mondial de l'humanité de l'UNESCO, mais aussi de la réserve marine de Shark Bay (ce qui rend obligatoire le paiement d'un droit d'entrée sur le site du village, même pour se garer quelques heures !). En pratique, il faut arriver dans l'après-midi pour passer la nuit sur le camping du resort, et ainsi être à l'heure pour le nourrissage des dauphins (principale attraction du site). Par ailleurs, la vue est magnifique depuis la plage, avec de nombreux pélicans qui trainent par là !

Located at the northern end of the peninsula of Shark Bay, the site of Monkey Mia is part of the World Heritage Site of Humanity by UNESCO, but the Shark Bay Marine Reserve (which makes it mandatory payment of an entrance fee to the site of the village, even to park a few hours!). In practice, it should arrive in the afternoon to spend the night camping on the resort, and so be in time for the feeding of dolphins (the main attraction of the site). Moreover, the view is beautiful from the beach, with many pelicans lurking in there!
