Monumental
Since the beginning of the twelfth century a religious hospital existed at the output port of the river Rhone, on the bridge of the Guillotiere. Francois Rabelais, a famous French novelist doctor worked there, circa 1532, while writing his first book, printed in Lyon. The place was enlarged several times, finally consisting of a grand facade of 375 meters long along the banks of the river. It is mounted by a large dome, burned down in 1944 but rebuilt.
