Del Puente Restaurant
I don't know the name of this restaurant, but it's really easy to find because it's right at the beginning of the bridge that crosses the river that goes to the bus station and Matara colonial center. It's one of the best meals I've ever eaten in Sri Lanka. It usually consists of a simple rice and curry, and a selection of vegetables, but it's very tasty, with good ingredients and yes, it's very spicy. But they do sell water! The place was packed with locals, not tourists! Upstairs you'll find a small room with a fan in it to cool off with. Food here is usually eaten with the hands, but tourists almost always use a fork or spoon.
If not, just ask, they don't get offended, but if you are eating with your hands, you have to do it the right way. The left hand is considered unclean. I think we went 2 euro meal between two. Then next you have several exotic fruit stands for a good dessert.
