De Luna Castle

A 45 kilómetros al norte de Badajoz nos encontramos con Alburquerque. Sobre un cerro que se alza por encima de la localidad, perteneciente a la Sierra de San Pedro, se encuentra el Castillo de Luna. Se trata de una de la fortalezas mejor conservadas de Extremadura situada en una región perteneciente a la Orden de Santiago en el siglo XII. Todavía se conservan muchos de los elementos originales que encontramos en sus murallas, como las puertas de entrada así como escudos y baluartes. Para acceder al castillo deberás atravesar las puertas y entrar en el barrio gótico de Alburquerque, también conocido como barrio judio. Largas y estrechas callejuelas te llevarán hacia él en un trayecto ascendente para tomarse con calma. Entre los elementos destacables del castillo se encuentra la Torre del Homenaje de cinco plantas que servía, al igual que las murallas, como elemento de defensa contra las invasiones árabes y portuguesas. Ya a principios del siglo XX el Castillo de Luna fue declarado Monumento Nacional. Su buen estado se debe en parte a la reconstrucción que se llevo a cabo después de la Guerra Civil. Hoy día tiene diferentes utilidades, desde colegio público a archivo de la ciudad, pudiendo realizar visitas guiadas a través de representaciones teatrales que recrean épocas antiguas al igual que sucede en la Ciudad Amuralla de Cáceres.
