Historic broom workshop

While many might not think to stop at a place like he David Mountain Working Broom Shop at first glance, we decided we'd give it a try since we'd driven nearly 600 miles across Texas to see the area. I'm so glad we did. We met a "retired" gentleman who apprenticed with a broom maker years ago, when he was in his 60's. Now in his mid-70's, he runs the business with occasional help from his wife but he does all work by hand. Incredible! He demonstrated how to make a broom using straw, twine, wire and, in the example he showed us the day we were there, a dried cactus for a handle. His work was meticulous and you could see he took pride in it.

He chooses his orders now but he shared that his daughter put his business on line a few years ago and he ended up with an order of more than 5,000 brooms for the east coast of America. He worked day and night from September through February to complete the order for the customer...by hand. Wow! If you're visiting the Big Bend area of Texas, stop in and stay a while. He's bound to have a story to tell you.
