The Dar Pomorza Ship
The Dar Pomorza is a Polish frigate built in 1909 that is currently in use as a museum-ship in the port of Gdynia. It won the Cutty Sark trophy in 1980. The ship was built in 1909 as a German training ship. In 1920, after the First World War, the ship was taken to France after being acquiesced by Britain. There it was assigned to the navel school in St-Nazaire and renamed "Colbert". The ship was given to the Baron de Forrest to compensate for the loss of his sailboat. Renamed as Prinzess Eitel Friedrich, it was bought by the community of Pomerania in Poland for 7000 pounds, and became the training ship for the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia.
It was given the name Dar Pomorza which means "gift of Pomerania" in English. In 1930 the ship was repaired and equipped with an auxiliary diesel engine. In September 1981, it made its final voyage and on August 4, 1982, it was decommissioned and replaced by the Dar Mlodziezy.
