Curanilahue, Commune of Mining Legends

Curanilahue in the Kurangilahue Mapuche language means "stony ford". It's in the province of Arauco, south of the eighth region of Biobío. It's a commune which grew from a mining settlement in the 19th century. It used to be called "the graveyard of the Spanish" due to the many battles fought here, the Mapuche resistance always beat any attackers. This small mining town today has a population of 31,686 inhabitants. They cross the calm waters of the river Curanilahue and Pilpil, which have been used to build a pool used often in summer. There's also a camping area, where the inhabitants of the surrounding villages go to spend a few days from time to time.
