Postcard-perfect castle
One of the most famous castles in the south of Scotland, Culzean Castle is often seen on postcards. Located in Ayr, on the west coast, this L-shaped castle was built in the late 18th century by architect Robert Adam by order of the Earl of Cassilis, who wanted a palace to live. Despite being built on a cliff, the castle has never been involved in wars or sieges. In fact, its location was chosen not for strategic reasons but simply for the amazing views! Over time the castle fell into the hands of the Kennedy family, and in 1945 they donated it to the National Trust for Scotland. In 1946, General Eisenhower used it as his European headquarters.
