Small cave near Fontanosas

The Cueva de Tio Maximino is one of two caves near the tiny town of Fontanosas in the heart of the Alcudia Valley in Castilla la Mancha, Spain. One of the caves (the Cueva del Peñon) is located at the top of a rocky peak and requires hiking through the olive groves, but the other is Cueva de Tio Maximinio, a small cave in a rocky ravine not far from the edge of town.

It’s best to go with a local (which my wife happens to be) as the exact location of the cave is a tad difficult to determine from the road. Once you’ve found it, your best bet is to just head straight down the steep ravine walls from the road (make sure to hang on to trees so you don’t fall). Once you’re down there, you’ll find a natural pool and a small cave with an opening which lets you climb up to the top of the other side of the ravine. If you can, try to go after the spring rains as a beautiful waterfall forms in the mouth of the cave and the natural pool is clean and cool.
