Alamo (Astor Place Cube)

A New York ritual

Astor Place is only a little road that runs for two blocks in Manhattan, near Cooper Square. At one point the road opens, becoming a kind of nameless small square. In the center stands the Alamo, or Astor Place Cube, a sculpture of a black cube by Tony Rosenthal. The cube can be spun on its axis, and there are those who consider spinning it to be a New York ritual. I was struck by the beauty of the building at 445 Lafayette Street. It is just a residential building, but it has a really interesting design.
