Crypt of Van Bree, a famous Belgium Industrialist
Firmin Van Bree (1880-1960), was a famous Belgian industrialist who was intrigued by the beauty of San Juan de Luz and the hill of Santa Barbara, where he spent his summers, with trips to the Congo. He was generous and had a big heart, he collaborated with several institutions: National Foundation for Cancer and Leprosy Congolese Red Cross, Hoover Foundation ... San Juan de Luz, was named Citizen of Honor, for helping the development of the city. It is in Santa Barbara where he bought some land and construted 3 villas, in 2 of which he lived for the last years of his life. In the late 50s his friend Pavlosky commissioned the construction of a tiny chapel and a crypt like that of San Fermin who was buried in Amiens.
In this place lie his remains. It is at the top of the hill of Santa Barbara, and at the entrance you can see a statue of San Fermin like the one in the Louvre Museum. In the zone there are many of interesting places to see: The tip of Santa Barbara, the heart of St Jean de Luz, the Chateau d 'Abbadia, Larrun, Sara, Biarritz, Lake Senpere, Hondarribia ... Don´t forget the 25 km of marked trails along the coast from Hendaye to Biarritz.
