A beautiful Scottish village
Cromarty, at the mouth of Cromarty Firth, is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Scotland. In the 17th century it was one of the busiest ports in the country, thanks to a thriving trade in grains, hand weaving, tool manufacture, salt, fish, etc ... and in the 18th century, merchants and traders built their large houses around the traditional fishermen's cottages. The industries have all declined since then, but today the National Trust for Scotland does its best to preserve the old styles of the village and give it a new lease on life.
Today, Cromarty is a picturesque town with narrow streets, white houses, and a small marina that offers seasonal ferries to Nigg Bay.
The Palace of Justice, built in 1773, houses the city Museum, where you can see waxworks and learn about the history of the town. The 17th century cottage of Hugh Miller (1802-1856), the son of a sea captain who became a respected geologist, writer, editor and theologian, is open to the public. And be sure to visit the Dolphin Center, where you can arrange a boat trip to look for bottle-nosed dolphins!
