Church and castle
To access Crichton Castle, we park our car adjacent the old church in the village. It is a church that has a common past with the castle, but it is in much better shape as it has been used continually in comparison with the castle. In medieval times, churches, monasteries and other similar sites used to be located next to the castle as a protective measure. This church is situated on a hill, on the way to the castle and surrounded by flowering trees on one side and on the other side there is a cemetery, all of which is properly fenced in since its last restoration in the early twentieth century.
It is thus quite picturesque and enjoyable. Although, there is no exact date for it's original construction it is estimated to have been made in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, shortly after the construction of the castle. It is only open a few hours per week, this is because the priest is shared with another village and thus cannot be there all the time.
