Like being in a period film
Magistrates Square (sometimes called Courthouse Square) is the colonial heart of the beautiful Galle Fort historic area. It’s more of a reference point than a tourist attraction, but the old white-washed buildings and massive Banyan trees makes quite an impression when you first lay eyes on it.
The square itself is home to a number of beautiful colonial buildings like the original Post Office, the Courthouse, and the Saskia Fernando Gallery, one of the most popular contemporary art galleries in Galle Fort. These days, it’s mainly a meeting point for locals to come and chat or play some football in the evenings. We loved just aimlessly exploring the centuries-old streets and, in order not to get too lost, ended up using Magistrates Square as our point of reference to get back to our hotel.
