Church, Market and Justice
One of the most important monumental and historical attractions to be found in Clackmannan is on the central street, where we found the remains of what was the building known as Toolboth (what remains is the tower) from the 16th century, a municipal building from where justice was dispensed, business contracts were signed and events were celebrated. Alongside this is the famous San Mannan altar stone, elevated high over another stone forming a crude cross (possibly from the 7th or 8th centuries). And finally one of the crosses of the Market (Market Cross) which is the most rustic and the oldest in Scotland, indicating that this was the commercial centre of the town, where cattle fairs were held and where the market was located.
