Comstock Covered Bridge

Connecticut’s three remaining covered bridges, picturesquely perched above rushing rivers, are classic photo opportunities in any season as well as instant reminders of the past. They recall a time when travel was slower and riskier, and transportation depended on horses rather than cars.

But though all three are lovely, the Comstock Bridge, which spans the Salmon River between the towns of East Hampton and Colchester, is special. That’s because this historic wooden bridge is closed to vehicular traffic, meaning you can not only walk across it but spend time within it, contemplating the shadows cast by the roof beams overhead and the water sparkling between the floorboards below.
