Como
The city of Como is surrounded by mountains that line the banks of Lake Como. The city maintains a development plan created by the Romans. Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger were born here. they are the city's most famous sons and statues of them were placed in the facade of the Duomo, the only example in the Christian world of pagan figures in a church. The banks of the lake and Cavour Square transformed this into a very attractive city for tourism, with shops of all kinds, some very luxurious, cafes, hotels and restaurants. The historic center is built around the Piazza del Duomo and San Fedele.
The Broletto Palace, next to the cathedral, and civic tower are famous landmarks in the city. Building work on the Duomo began in the late fourteenth century and ended after four centuries. The Basilica of San Fedele, near the cathedral, is adjacent to two sixteenth century merchant houses with clay walls and the first floor supported by wooden boards. Behind this church, in the square Medaglie d'oro, arises Giovio Palace today houses the Archaeological Museum.
