The Commission on Chicago Landmarks is responsible for selecting the buildings, sites and districts for official legal protection in Chicago. Staff from the Division of Historic Preservation, and the Department of Zoning and Land Use are also responsible for reviewing proposals to modify existing protected districts as well as the demolition proposals for structures considered to have historical or architectural importance. The Commission consists of nine members appointed by the Mayor and City Council. It was created in 1968 by ordinance of the City, and is responsible for advising the City Council
