City Hall Park is defined by two important buildings: City Hall and the Woolworth Building. The Woolworth was the highest in New York for 16 years, and was opened by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. He flicked a switch and bathed the whole building with light from more than 80,000 light bulbs. Amazing gargoyles decorate this 241 meter tower. City Hall was designed in 1803 in a mix of federal and French Renaissance of styles, and retains its refined public function as the oldest building in the nation which still functions as a municipality. The park is very cute, and presided over by a splendid
Building and is an ideal point to visit the rest of the Financial District.
