Circumcision Square in Songho

2 reviews of Circumcision Square in Songho

Mystical Drawings

In the Dogon plain, Songho is a village where we were shown the square of male circumcision. Every three years the children are taken there, who stay there for 3 months preparing. During this training they paint images of totem poles, masks and other symbols on the wall of this natural shelter. Women and uninitiated children can not look or step inside this place (with the exception of tourists, as a servant ...). Funny how in these drawings they have integrated elements foreign to their culture, like calculators ... Gossips say that Mariscal found his inspiration here for his Cobi among other

Designs.

Excellent
Exploring the village, we reached the top of a cliff "Ort Songo" where are reflected symbolic paintings, some not so step into adolescence. But the walls are a sample of the totems, masks made by the guys correspond mostly to religious reasons related to the Dogon cosmo and life in all its stages in Mali. Traditionally circumcision is performed by the master blacksmith since the ancestor falls as office bearer of culture! It was he who forged for growing crops tools of the Dogon. At the time of the operation to circumcise their children, usually in groups around between eight to twelve years, now help them health professionals. Often leave the village together also a while, remain isolated with previous rites, before the operation are held by parents trying to show courage in the intervention showed no sign of pain. They wear a uniform as a chasuble and remain in isolated camps, until the wounds heal. Will be fed by families, play and sing with rattles like a ratchet, they could see the bottom of the cave so the people of the towns or visitors learn and give them gifts, food or coins to also bring good luck. Similar happens to girls with "female circumcision" today illegally in their homes at very early ages despite information campaigns; Unfortunately this is still happening to them. I could see how African women struggle to end such trauma, but African myths are entrenched even in these untamed peoples.
