Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo

1 review of Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo

Ivanovo Rock Churches are near the town...

Ivanovo Rock Churches are near the town of the same name, 15 km south of Rousse, the Danube and the border between Romania and Bulgaria. They are part of the UNESCO world heritage. It's a collection of churches, chapels and monasteries built on impressive cliffs, directly on the rock, on high, about 30 feet above the ground. Admission is 2 euros for chapel or church, and there are discounts for groups and students. I have not seen any public transport there. We went by car, but I imagine it will be possible with a travel agency to make a full day trip. You can only reach the church on foot. You you park at the bottom.

There was a group of pensioners ve had some problem with the slippery road that climbs to the monasteries. The caves were inhabited by Orthodox monks and have been since 1220. Once there were 40 churches and 300 other small caves with carved icons and altars. The paintings are well preserved in most of them.
