World Heritage Site
This, following the Roman ruins of Mérida, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Extremadura and is considered one of the main nuclei of early Christianity. During the Middle Ages, it was a place of pilgrimage throughout the Iberian Peninsula and a large part of Europe. It’s part of the Mérida Archeological Ensemble, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It was built outside the city walls in the 9th century and rests atop the tomb of Santa Eulalia. The modern temple was built in the 13th century after Alfonso IX’s Christian Reconquest and stands on the base of the original basilica, materials from which were recycled during the building of the modern church.
