Modest but harmonious
Salento's church, originally built in 1850, is a unique building because it is made entirely of ceroxylon wood from the columns to the roofs. This wood is rarely used in construction. In the early twentieth century, it´s location was moved and the temple was built with two towers. After several earthquakes in the 20s, it had to be rebuilt but with only one tower. Its style is a blend of Spanish colonial and Colombian naïve. Its interior is modest but the religious people of Salento are always crowded inside. The day I visited the priest spoke of the dangers of Facebook and the Internet for young people.
The church is located in the main square of Salento which is where life is concentrated. It´s full of people, restaurants juice stands and souvenir shops and craft stands.
