Church of Chichicastenango
Chichicastenango is a village in Quiche in Guatemala. Its population are the Quiche Maya and the language is called quiche too. The village church, which also has a lively and famous market on Thursdays and Sundays, is a mix between the traditional Catholic church and the holy Mayan places. As Guatemalans, at the time of colonization, were not entitled to have multiple gods, they began to go to church, but to worship their gods and spirits. The figure of the Virgin or Jesus is their god. The tradition lives on. On the steps of the church incense is sold. It will burn inside the church, with candles that are placed on the ground.
To get to the spirits, some take a soda, burping and think that gives them a voice from beyond. To reach "Chichi", take a bus from Los Encuentros, the same place where you go to Lake Atitlan, but in the opposite direction. Market days it's quite difficult to take a bus anywhere in the city. Go to the station and have patience because it filled to the max!
