Chiesa di San Lorenzo a Castel Madama

La chiamano ancora così, i paesani di Castel Madama: la "chiesa nuova", nonostante sia stata costruita nel 1727 e ora purtroppo non sia più agibile, anche dopo più interventi di restauro nel corso degli anni. Ma è assolutamente da vedere, poiché il suo aspetto mastodontico è assai particolare, collocata com'è incastrata letteralmente nelle abitazione che la assediano e quasi la fanno scomparire. Persino la porta d'ingresso è quasi a ridosso di un edificio alla sua sinistra. Stiamo parlando della Chiesa di San Lorenzo, che si trova in cima al paese, una zona che allora era ancora semidisabitata: la definiscono "nuova", si diceva, perché qui sicuramente c'era un'altra struttura sacra, che rimane solo nel passaparola di secoli. Fu edificata con il finanziamento della popolazione che poi probabilmente si mise a costruire attorno ad essa creando lo scenario urbanistico che vediamo oggi, cioè quei palazzi incastrati di cui sopra e una serie di vicoli e archetti per passare da uno all'altro. Alla destra del portone, si nota una delle grosse mura contrafforti che la cingono: qui, in un cerchio vuoto, c'era un orologio solare. La chiesa ospitava la Compagnia del Suffragio, che riuniva i confratelli della Buona Morte, i quali accompagnavano i defunti nel loro ultimo viaggio, defunti che fino alla metà del 1800 venivano anche seppelliti qui. Suscita un insieme di emozioni, soprattutto ci si rende conto di come possa ora sembrare quasi estranea dal resto dei palazzi che però non vivrebbero senza di lei, visto che le sono fissati addosso.
