Sembra che il poverello di Assisi, nelle sue peregrinazioni in giro per l'Italia, si sia fermato a Sutri fino a organizzare la costruzione di una chiesa che poi da lui prese il nome, anche se in origine era dedicata a Sant'Angelo. Parliamo del 1222. E qui dovrebbe essere arrivato pure un altro santo famoso, Antonio da Padova. All'esterno, la chiesa si mostra massiccia e anonima, all'interno si presenta scarna in fatto di ornamenti, a parte alcuni che da soli valgono la visita.
