A modern design
Building work started on this new library in 1982, and it was opened two years later. The library was designed by the Department of Architecture at the Cheshire County Council, and won an award in 1987. The new library was built on the site of the old Westminster Coach and Motor Car Works, with a sign above the door remembering this history. The red brick facade was designed by Philip H Lockwood and was built in 1913-14 for the Westminster Coach and Motor Car Works.
