Wall Museum - Checkpoint Charlie

This is a museum about the wall. It is next to Check Point Charlie and tickets cost 12 euros. It is quite expensive compared to state museums, but this is a private museum. You start in a room that tells the story of the wall, built in 1961. You hear about people who tried to escape and go west, one in a balloon, another hiding in the engine of a car. It's amazing what people did to get to a democracy. There is a theater where they show movies and give lectures. It's not translated into Spanish but you can rent an audio guide. They have some pieces of the wall that were saved when the wall fell, and other memorabilia from that time.

Checkpoint Charlie is the name given by the Western Allies to the border established between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War, which led to the division of the two Germanys. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie has become a tourist attraction and gets very busy with tourists visiting.

The museum was founded by Dr. Rainer Hildebrandt (a human rights activist) and was inaugurated in October, 1962.

Today the museum takes up more than 2000 square meters and is filled with documents, graphics and objects that show all the ways in which people tried to cross the wall and what it represented.

The museum is open seven days a week, from 9 am to 10 pm. The price of the entry is 12.50 € for adults, 9.50 € for students and 6.50 € for children between the ages of 7 and 18.
