Natural mummification in Peru
Chauchilla cemeteries was one of many pre-Inca cultures, which was robbed by grave robbers, who stole all the treasures made of ceramic, metallic and some textiles, accompanying the dead, leaving the desert mummies. Until the year 1997, the National Institute of Culture of Peru, took over protecting and making it an archaeological site. "Chauchilla is the only archaeological site in Peru where you can see mummies in the open, in tombs and it is a space in the process of excavation and study." You can find it about 28 km southeast of the city of Nazca. Reached through the American South, taking the road on the left, about 20 km from the city.
Another 8 km of rocky road and you will reach it. It is marked and anyone in town can help you find it. The place has an extension of 2 km long by 0.5 km. That's why the last stretch of rocky road provides the vision of bones, skulls and a ceramic piece, across the desert. Today, chaired by a small museum that preserves the delicate mummies, and an area much smaller. They are exposed to the elements, original graves of ancient cultures, with a big assortment of mummies, scalps and bones, over 1000 years old. The desert of this area, has granted these forces a natural mummification, there are even pieces of skin preserved. One of those places that doesn´t get to many people.
