Tomb of Pope John XXIII
Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, better known as Pope John XXIII, was born in the village of Sotto il Monte in Bergamo province. He was pope from 1958 to 1963, and was beatified in 2000. He is extremely popular in Bergamo as he was born there and studied at the city's seminary. But, Roncalli was a surprise choice for the position of pope as he was almost 77 years old when he was chosed. In Bergamo Cathedral, there is a chapel in his honor, with a sculpture, relics and the coffin in which he was buried. The main street of the city is named after him.
