French cheese and charcuterie in Brixton Market
Champagne + Fromage is exactly what it sounds like…crisp French champagne by the glass or by the bottle and an incredible selection for French cheeses and charcuterie. Apparently, there are a couple of these scattered around London but I went to the one in Brixton Market and loved it. I had an afternoon to kill before my wife arrived in the city, so I thought that a book, some champagne, and charcuterie sounded like a plan.
Apparently, the place even generated some controversy a while back as being the visible face of the “yuppie gentrification” happening in Brixton. For me, who cares? What matters is this: is the place good? Yes, it is. I got a glass of the cheapest champagne (that’s by one negative sticking point, all the champagnes are a bit over-priced) and some rabbit and Armagnac sausage (which was spectacularly good). It was served by a friendly young French girl and about half way through my meal an older French gentleman came by with a little basket of bread, apologetically stating that “you can’t eat without bread! Everything is better with bread.” He was right.
