Symbol of the City

Deva City is in the centre of Hundedoara and is surrounded by hills. The name itself means "strength", as it was founded in the 13th century following the construction of a citadel on top of a 200m high hill of volcanic rock, and it subsequently became an important economic centre in the Middle Ages . This military fortress is a symbol for the city and it is also a historical monument. Currently it sits in ruins because in 1849 the keg where the ammunition was being stored exploded. However, it is frequented by locals as the hill, under which the modern city lies, is an excellent viewpoint and it is also a nature reserve (measuring 30 acres).

The walls enclose mysteries and legends, and it consists of a central building on top of the hill and the three auxiliary enclosures with doors and it has been reinforced with defensive towers. You can visit either by climbing the 113 steps that start off in the city park or either by taking the cable car.
