Avant-garde gallery and studio
La Neomudejar is a recently-opened cultural space in the industrial yards behind Madrid’s Atocha Station. It serves as both an avant-garde art gallery and a studio/residence space for artists, and the artists in residence and the exhibits change on a fairly constant basis. Entry is 2 euros, if I remember correctly.
The gallery-museum is located in an abandoned industrial space, but the old workshops and warehouses now house envelope-pushing video art and sculpture. For me, the space itself was worth the visit alone. They’ve left the place nearly intact, with peeling paint, cracked walls, and even the odd piece of industrial machinery scattered around. When we went, there was a conceptual piece with colored strings and music in a darkened room (really cool to immerse yourself in), an exhibit based around neon lights, a photography exhibit about the struggles in the Ukraine, and a few smaller exhibits of paintings and drawings. Another cool thing is that the artists-in-residence have studios on the top floor and you can go and see what they’re working on and get a glimpse into the actual creative process behind the works you see on display.
