Central Market
Salamanca Central Market is a short walk from the main square and pedestrian area of the city. Recently renovated, it was originally the old market hall in the city. It is located in a commercial area of the city, near to various clothing and accessories stores, cafes and restaurants and food shops. The central market is a historical monument, built early last century by Joaquín Vargas. Most tourists visiting Salamanca pass through the central market, for its location and its architectural interest but also its legendary gastronomy. It offers many typical regional products such as sausages and cured hams, cheeses, and dairy products, meat, fish and vegetables.
The first Salamanca market was held in the twelfth century, in the old cathedral of Salamanca. But, following the growth of the city, a larger area was needed so the current market was built in 1899, in the style of the wrought iron central markets of Paris.
