Caves of the Candelaría

Caves of Candelaria is the first ecotourism initiative in this region of Alta Verapaz. Now they are almost as famous as the caves of Lanquin. There is normally more national tourism than from abroad, because it is a little tricky to get there from the beaten tourist track. It is 3 and a half hours from the capital, by way of Coban. These caves were discovered by Frenchman Daniel Dreux in the 1970s. The entire region has caves but Candelaria makes up the largest group of caves. Now people from the village of Candelaria are equipped to receive tourists and help them explore the region. They built some wooden bungalows which only costs $20 per night for a double room.
