1 review of Cave of Zeus

Ancient mountain range

The mountains Dikti (or Lassithiotica Ori) is a mountain range that extends east of the island of Crete in the prefecture of Lassithi, and on the west by the prefecture of Heraklion. According to Greek mythology, Zeus was born here and taken to Mount Ida, also in Crete, hidden in the cave called Dicteo Andro, where he grew up. In the north of the main massif located Lassith Plateau. The topology is rich with numerous plateaus (Lassithi, Katharo, Omalos Viannou, Limnakaro), secondary peaks and valleys. Some important peaks are: Spathi 2148m, Christos Afentis / Madara Psari 2.141m, 2.085m Lazaros, Katharo Tsivi 1.665m, 1.571m Afentis, Selena 1559m and 1.489m Korfi Platia.

The pricipal massive horseshoe shaped valley around Selakano. Much of the mountains, including Selakano valley is covered by pines (Pinus brutia), Kermes oak (Quercus coccifera), cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens), oaks (Quercus ilex) and maples of Crete. The fertile valleys and plateaus Dikti are very important for the local economy. Great food and people.
