These are the old quarters of Salisbury. During the Middle Ages, the city was divided into these zones, each of which was administered by a merchant or an important noble. The only Close that did not belong to a particular family was the Cathedral Close, which was tied to the religious community. The Cathedral Close is the largest in England and the best preserved. Just inside the door that separates it from the rest of the city, you will find yourself in another world with historic houses and ancient colleges.
