Castro Urdiales Lighthouse

El faro de Castro Urdiales se encuentra insertado en el torreón SE del Castillo de Santa Ana, en pleno puerto, y nació en 1853 como un faro de 5º orden con una característica de luz fija variada por destellos rojos cada 3 segundos y un alcance de 13 millas. Una lámpara de petróleo sustituyó a la original de aceite hasta que el faro se electrificó completamente en 1919. En 1927 se remodeló el torreón, se instaló una nueva linterna y se cambió la característica a cuatro destellos. En 1953 se instaló una nueva sirena antiniebla, todavía en funcionamiento. En la actualidad la linterna en uso pertenecía al antiguo faro de Adra. La vivienda del farero se encuentra en la terraza de la antigua fortaleza, y la maquinaria y sala de mantenimiento se encuentran en lo que era la capilla del castillo. Ha habido proyectos para cambiar el emplazamiento del faro y recuperar el castillo para su uso como museo, pero la imagen de Castro Urdiales está ya asociada a la imagen del castillo, su torre-faro y la adyacente iglesia gótica de Santa María.

Exteriormente está bien conservado pareciendo que está casi entero, por dentro organizan de vez en cuando alguna exposición Si miramos en lo alto podemos ver el faro junto al mirador y al lado la cafetería del Castillo. Puede decepcionar un poco por su pequeño tamaño pero sus vistas junto al puerto impresionan.
