Via Francigen
For day two the navigation was simpler. The day started following a small part of the Via Francigena, which runs from Canterbury to Rome. First stop, after crossing again the Fiume Orcia (this time using a bridge) was Bagno Vignoni. A quick coffee beside the thermal village pond. Healing properties all around.
The track out of the village climbs up to Vignoni Alto a tiny fortified village and then descends to San Quirico. At this point leave the Via Francigena and turn towards Pienza. The path winds through the classic rolling hills of Tuscany as seen on postcards and biscuit tins.
Lunch at Agriturismo il Rigo. Once again fine km zero cuisine, washed down with an earthy red wine. The cantucci and vinsanto were sublime. I just turned up and they were kind enough to feed me, but you will be much more welcome if you book ahead.
