Save Room for Dessert
We wanted to visit the “Feria de Artesanía” (crafts fair) that is celebrated in Antigua, and we went to eat to this restaurant. It is easy to get there. You have to pass the town of Antigua and following the FV-20 road, you reach the detour that takes you to the “Valles de Ortega”. The detour is next to the restaurant “La Fortaleza”. After the detour, follow the road and take a left on the third crossroad (San Roque Street) and then turn left on the second street, Gayria.
The restaurant is big. We ate in a big salon, with big tables and comfortable chairs, everything made out of wood. The decoration pays homage to the countryside of the Canary Islands; the furniture is the same one that we could find in our grandparents’ homes. Besides the salon, it has a covered terrace, where you can smoke. The most important thing: the food. Be sure to order the potatoes “arrugadas” (the sauce that accompanies them is delicious), the fried cheese (breaded cheese accompanied with blueberry sauce and quince jelly). I also recommend the fried calamari and the fish croquettes, also the sirloin and the typical “carne de cabra” (goat meat).
However, the best was yet to come. “Doña Carmen” suggested we order the plate of desserts (to share, 6 persons), all homemade. 100% no nonsense desserts. You should definitely discover them for yourselves.
After tasting the desserts, my favorite one was the cheesecake and the “polvito”. It is definitely worth it to go there, if only for the desserts. Oh! And don’t forget to order the restaurant’s typical dish: “tunera al ajillo”.
