The defenses of the city
Flanking the historic center of the city of Carlisle, is a castle that was built to defend the city. It was built by the immediate heirs of the Normans in the XI century and played a vital role in wars between the English and the Scots, having been owned by both countries. Relevant papers show that Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here. The castle is in perfect condition because it is still in use (and has never ceased to be) by the British Army, mainly by the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, one of the most historic units of the army. This makes this visit restricted to certain areas, but despite this, it is worthwhile because of the beautiful views over the city.
