Hexham Old Jail
Hexham historic jail was the first purpose built prison in England. It was ordered to be built by the Bishop of York and can be dated back to 1333 AD. This building served as a prison for at least 500 years up to victorian times. It is now a museum that houses the original cells and some of the torture devices that were used. Therefeore it is suitable for most visitors, but may be a bit much for children. It's a fantastic building and a must-see for any visitors to Hexham.
