Capilla de los Santos Mártires

Hay veces que una imagen vale más que mil palabras o que el recuerdo de un lugar te lleva irremediablemente a un rincón que se ha grabado para siempre en tu memoria. Eso me pasa a mi con la Catedral de Calahorra y la capilla de los Santos Mártires. Éste es probablemente el rincón que más me ha impresionado de la Catedral y de toda la ciudad de Calahorra. La capilla de los Santos Mártires es la más amplia de todo el edificio. Fue construida en el siglo XVII y pronto la dotaron del magnífico retablo y ornamentos que podemos admirar en la actualidad. Es en conjunto una auténtica belleza, pero destaca el impresionante retablo de estilo rococó con relieves que representan el martirio de San Emeterio y San Celedonio. El color inunda cada detalle y está rematado por los lienzos que decoran el resto de la capilla y su gran cúpula central. La capilla ha sido restaurada recientemente por lo que podemos disfrutar de esta obra de arte en todo su esplendor. ¡Prohibido salir de Calahorra sin visitarla!

There are times that a picture is worth a thousand words or that the memory of a place takes you irremediably to a corner that has been engraved forever in your memory. That happens to me with the Cathedral of Calahorra and the chapel of the Holy Martyrs. This is probably the corner that has impressed me most of the Cathedral and the whole city of Calahorra. The chapel of the Holy Martyrs is the largest of the whole building. It was built in the 17th century and soon was endowed with the magnificent altarpiece and ornaments that we can admire today. It is altogether a true beauty, but it emphasizes the impressive altarpiece of rococo style with reliefs that represent the martyrdom of San Emeterio and San Celedonio. The color floods every detail and is topped by the canvases that decorate the rest of the chapel and its large central dome. The chapel has been recently restored so we can enjoy this work of art in all its splendor. It is forbidden to leave Calahorra without visiting it!
