Corbridge
Hadrian's Wall represents the Roman Empire's northernmost border. Its construction separated the civilized world from the Barbarians. A wall of such magnitude needed key fortifications and supplies. Thus was born the Corbridge Roman settlement (south wall), first as a camp and later as a city. The location of this camp was not selected at random as it was a strategic point at the intersection of one of the main routes to Scotland, between two major rivers, the Tyne and the Solway. Its proximity to the wall indicates that it was one of the main points of supply for the fortifications of then wall.
